Internal Medicine-General internal medicine physicians, or internists, are primary-care doctors who perform physical exams and treat a wide spectrum of common illnesses in adult men and women. One of every four physicians in the U.S. is an internist, many of whom are certified in one of 19 subspecialties, including cardiology, infectious disease and medical oncology.

It’s true that some medical problems are out of our control, but whenever possible we want to help you reduce your chances of becoming ill. As your doctor, your internist will take all the relevant information – from your physical exam and detailed personal and family health history – and develop a plan for your preventive care. Preventive care includes routine exams and visits for flu shots and other vaccinations. Regular screenings, such as cholesterol tests and blood pressure checks, help to maintain and improve your health.

This care may sound like an emergency (and it sometimes is) but in the world of internal medicine this term describes care that covers a short period of time, such as for illnesses that are treatable and curable, or injuries from which you will heal. You should visit your internist for illnesses such as respiratory infections, flu, and sore throats; and for minor injuries, aches, and pains. Or, if you have something bothering you but don’t know what it is, see your internist. Internists are experts in diagnosing illnesses.

Chronic care includes management of illnesses and conditions that require long-term treatment and coordination of care, such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, high cholesterol, asthma, and depression. Your doctor helps you manage your chronic illness by teaching you what to expect and how to take care of yourself.
